Make Cheap Electronic Labels For Your Stuff Using RFID Tags

Do you need to keep track of hundreds or thousands of different items? Maybe you have a CD collection that has been growing for years and constantly trying to remember what you own or where the CD is currently located is taking up your time and money. You may want to create a database of everything you own but how do you track the physical items? RFID tags can help.

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is an method of tracking physical materials through a small flat transponder attached to the item. You can apply an RFID tag to an object and use radio waves to read and track the item. A standard RFID tag contains an integrated circuit for storing the information you can read and an antenna for transmitting the signal. Many companies and manufactures use RFID in their supply chain management process. The companies apply RFID tags to the items to track and they are able to track their supply easily. You can use the same ideas behind large supply chain management to your home.

You may have heard about RFID tags tracking our every move and are aphrenrsive about tagging the items in your home. After all, you really would not want someone with an RFID reader to be able to see what you have in your home. Labeling your home inventory and collections with RFID will not announce to other people what you own because the tags will actually not have any specific information on them. To begin labeling your products at home, you should purchase passive RFID tags. Passive RFID does not actively broadcast a signal, the RFID information is only readable by a RFID reader in close proximity. If you are cautious about possible exposure of your inventory to others you can test your reader and your RFID tags before applying the labels to your products.

RFID tags are so small now that you can actually purchase labels that contain a RFID chip embedded in the paper. The chips are also very thin so you may not even notice the chip at all. If you want to make labels for a collection of products or to mark your home inventory, choose a label that is not too large and fits your budget. The paper labels are so easy to use that you may start to label everything you come in contact with. You can usually find these RFID labels at stores that sell products to warehouses or online. If this is your first purchase of RFID labels, you may want to seek out a store in your town and discuss your options with a sales clerk. Many companies will try to sell you a printer, labels, and an elaborate RFID reader but there really is no need to over purchase your supplies. All you need are the labels and a RFID reader, which can be purchased second hand through Ebay or other website. If you visit a local store, you may want to request a demonstration of different readers and different labels in order to choose the right labels for your needs.

You will need to purchase an inventory database program for your computer, of if you have the time and the desire, you could make your own. There are many different database programs available online, it is simply a matter of finding the program that meets your needs. To keep your work down, choose a database program that can store the RFID information in them. This allows you to enter all the data pertaining to the items you want to track into one location and scan the RFID label you attach to the product. Also, you may want to spend a little time thinking about why you are labeling the items in your home in order to purchase the best database program for your needs. If you loan items in your collection out, you can use your database to track which items you have loaned out. If you want to create a home inventory in case of loss or theft, your database program can be much easier and simpler.

Because of the demands of many large companies, RFID tags have become very thin and very cheep. You really do not need to do anything special to create a useable RFID label for your home, just slap a pre-made paper label on the items you want to track. With the proper database program and reader you will not need to write anything on the label, just attach, scan the chip, and record the data on your computer. The hard part of this tracking process, will be collecting the data into a database you can use. There are several companies that sell a database and RFID reader package to allow the home user to start an RFID inventory. And who knows, once you begin using RFID tags in your home, you may start to discover additional uses for these handy RFID tags.

Get Free, Legal, Broadband Internet With A Satellite Dish

C-band satellite dishes were used to receive satellite television signals during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. These satellite dishes were usually about 10 feet across and were a constant complaint for homeowners and neighbors wherever they were installed. Because of changes in television signals and advancements in technology, these large satellite dishes have been replaced with a smaller and less costly dish. However many of the big satellite dishes still work and can be used for new technology applications. If you have a big satellite dish and want to continue to use to watch television, there are many free-to-air television stations still accessible through these satellite dishes and some stations periodically open their scrambled feeds which can be picked up with the satellite dishes. But if you want to use this dish for a bigger project, you can also use the dish as a wifi internet antenna.

To convert your satellite dish into a powerful wifi internet antenna, you will need to purchase several items including an N-connector and a pigtail connector with the necessary connector for your internet access point on one end and an N-connector on the other. You can find the N-connector and pigtail cables available for purchase online and in case your not sure where to purchase all the different parts needed, you can find several different kits available for purchase. The most important part for this entire project is the N-connector so you may want to purchase more than one. You also need a thin copper sheet, plastic for the base, and a soldering iron.

Using standard solid-core house wire you need to build an element for the wireless signal. Cut a piece of wire 244mm long and bend the wire into a double diamond or bow tie shape. You want to make each diamond in this element symmetrical so this may take a little bit of practice. You should have extra wire available incase you want to stop and start over several times. If you find the wire too hard to bend, try using two pairs of pliers as it can be very firm. Next, you need to cut a 110mm square of black plastic to use as a base for your new wifi reflector. You should drill a hole in the center of your plastic to allow the N-connector to fit properly.

Prep your N-connector by soldering a piece of copper wire to the center pin and to the outside of the connector. In order to save time, you should solder the outside wire first as it will take longer to heat and attach. After your N-connector has cooled attach it to one side of the plastic base using epoxy and epoxy the thin copper sheet to the other side of the plastic base. After the epoxy has cured, solder your copper bow tie to the two vertical wires, the bow tie can not directly touch the copper plate below it so you may want to prop it up with a couple pieces of excess copper plating. Once all your solder points are cooled, trim the excess from the vertical wires and relish in the fact, you just made an antenna.

Now it is time to connect your antenna to the satellite dish. Connect the N-connector to the feed horn on the satellite dish remembering to point the copper side of your antenna towards the satellite dish. This antenna is going to pull in wireless signals from your area and you will need a converter for your computer to take the signal being sent down the coax. This could be another access point or a cable internet box. The type of converter used will vary upon your computer and your available hardware. You can also convert your new satellite dish antenna to project your own internet signal in order to boost your wifi range.

After you have the antenna connected, you should set your satellite dish to point in a direction you expect to find at least one wifi signal. You may want to use a software program like kismet to search and find wifi signals in the area and test your antenna. You should be cautious with your new internet antenna as it may be more powerful than allowed by the FCC. Building these large wifi satellite dish antennas is a little complex and time consuming but for people who live in areas where it is hard to get broadband internet this is a viable and cost effective solution. If you live in an area where you have a large amount of open space and need or want to access the intent in these open areas, you can pick up satellite dishes for free from people who want to get rid of old equipment and build your own network of wifi antennas.

How to Improve Society Through Technology

Many people use technology to communicate with their friends and love ones but never give a thought to how technology has improved their lives. Technology surrounds us every day, the grocery store is dripping in technology, the buses run on computers, and even the dentist uses digital cameras and computer imaging systems instead of x-rays. While we live our lives surrounded with technology, have you ever stopped to consider how society can be changed through technology?

The internet opened up forms of communication that we never thought were possible before. Today we have hundreds of social news sites where individuals can write and post news reports pertaining to the world around them. People can also comment and respond to ideas through forums and commenting systems which means we can share ideas and knowledge with anyone in the world at any time. Imagine if we created a forum where this open communication path was used to create social policy and laws? No longer would social policy be created by the elite few who find themselves governing others but by the masses.

Open source software allows many people to provide their own input and knowledge towards the creation of useable software. There are still many societies where the exchange of ideas is not open or acceptable. We should bring open source software to these societies and help to teach that sharing ideas and knowledge with others can be a profitable endeavor for everyone. We can also take the ideas of working together to create other open source projects. Using the ideas of open source will increase the eduction level of people around the world, teachers can and are releasing their lessons and knowledge the world through the internet. Children who live their whole lives without access to teachers can now learn by listening to audio recordings or watching a television show.

Many employers area already using video technology to connect their office locations together and avoid large travel expenses. What if we connected employers with possible employees around the world through video communication? Technology could help raise the level of earnings for many people who barely make enough money to survive. A new form of work would be created through the use of video communication. Some workplaces already communicate mainly through email, why not expand this idea and hire the most qualified person no matter where they are located in the world.

Another method of sharing has been created through creative commons. We can improve society by releasing all forms of art under the creative commons licensing structure. Allowing other people to spread our art and use as they see fit can help spread the ideas behind our creations and challenge others to create as well. Time and time again society has been changed by the artistes within and today we have the ability to spread art to every corner of the world by using the internet and technology. Of course, all of our ideas towards using technology and the internet to improve society can only succeed if we have net neutrality. Individuals need to be able to choose what they access on the internet without the interference from an internet provider or their government.

The ability to share knowledge and information with anyone in the world through the internet is one of the best ways we can improve society. However, without a computer hardware infrastructure the internet is nothing but a communication idea. The One Laptop Per Child Initiative (OLPC for short) is a great example of how we can get computers into the hands of people who need them. Computers do not need to be top-of-the-line gaming computers designed to produce high end 3D graphics. We can provide low cost equipment to people who have never owned a computer before. These low end computers are able to connect to the internet and therefore connect to the world.

With an OLPC style computer and a webcam, individuals will be able to document the horrors inflicted on people in third world countries and post the information to the internet for all to see. No longer will one man or one government be able to hide behind their silence and abuse people in their countries. When a society is under siege by a despot, the truth can become societies best weapon. That truth can be recorded on computers and posted to the internet. Even if we can not get a computer in to the hands of every person in the world, there are other technologies that work just as well. Digital cameras can store thousands of pictures on a chip smaller than a postage stamp. If we arm people around the world with cameras we can still communicate and learn through the photos.

Cell phones are also a great technology that will help to improve the lives of people around the world. Even something as simple as a voice conversation can change a person’s life. If all you have is a cell phone that makes voice calls, you could connect to voice recognition software and communicate with the world. People could use cell phones to listen to educational recordings and expand their knowledge. We could teach people new skills and give them training all through a cell phone conversation.

Finally, advanced in manufacturing technology should be shared with all the countries of the world to help improve not only society but the environment as well. By training people on high speed manufacturing processes we can improve the working conditions of millions of people around the world. Clothing manufacturing will not longer need to be completed through sweatshop practices instead high-tech cloth cutters and sewing machines could be used.

Many times technology surrounds us and we fail to notice how our lives are improved. We have become so immune to how improved our lives are because of technology that we often fail to see that there are other people who need assistance. We need to spread our technology to all countries of the world and help to improve their societies as well.

Manage Your Social Media Addiction

Do you have accounts at every social media website that has been created? Do you spend all your free time reading the latest news or telling people what you are doing at a certain minute? Many people spend more time on social media websites then they do with their own families. If your constantly seeking out information and interacting on social media websites you may be addicted. While there is no “cure” for an internet or social media addiction, you can manage your social media addiction.

Many people find that if they do not manage their addiction to social media, they often end up sleep deprived or with mental and marital problems. Once you find yourself spending more time with your computer and social media sites than you spend on your job or with your family, you need to start managing your addiction. It is hard to control yourself, after all most social media websites allow you to create the media yourself and what is better than seeing materials you create published?

The first step to managing your social media addiction, is to pay attention to what you do online and what you enjoy. There are hundreds of different types of social media websites but which ones do you enjoy using and participating in the most? You may want to make a list of the sites that you spend the most amount of time on and list the reasons your enjoy those sites. Once you have the list of where you spend all your time, start removing websites and social media activities that you do not enjoy. Many sites take content from other sites and repurpose it on their websites, think about it, do you really need to spend your valuable time on these websites? There is no reason for you to be spending time on websites or activities you have no interest in. Stop wasting your internet time on activities that have no value directly to yourself.

As you begin to narrow your social media focus down to the websites and activities you truly enjoy, your probably found that you spent a lot of time in social media activities you did not care for. However, you can not simply replace the activities your no longer taking part in with more time on your favorite sites. The next step in managing your social media addiction is to set a time limit for your activities every day and schedule the time on your calendar. The key to this step is sticking to your plan. The time can not be flexible or you may discover you start to fall back into your old habits.

It is vital when trying to manage a social media addiction that you stop paying attention to how many “friends” you have. Stop following people that you do not care about. There is no need to have thousands of virtual friends. One of the most addictive part of social media websites is finding friends but do you really need to get updates from thousands of different people? Stop becoming friends with everyone who requests you as a friend or everyone who posts. Limit your “friendship” to a small set of people who highlight and create content that really interests you. Once you limit the number of people you are interacting with, you will discover that you are able to do more with your social media sites during the time you allot each day.

One great aspect of social media is that new tools and websites are constantly being created. If you hear others talking about a new website or new tool and you have to stop what you are doing to check the tools out for yourself, you have an addiction. In order to manage your social media addiction, you need to control your desire to stop everything your doing and flock to a new social media website. When you hear about a new tool, stop and think about whether or not this new tool fits with the websites you spend your social media time on. If you think it will make sure you include the tool in the scheduled time you have set aside for social media websites. Keep in mind that many of these tools are very popular for a week or two then disappear, do not waste your time on sites that do not add to your experience or take away from the key sites you have allocated your time to.

Finally, in order to manage your social media addiction, you need to disconnect social media from your cell phone. There is no need to have constant access to your favorite social media. If your in a business meeting or at a family event, keep your cell phone in your pocket and do not access social media websites. Stop posting your life on a webpage and start to share directly with the people around you. Stop this madness and start spending time with the people you care about. Social media is actually not very social, it’s nothing but a website.

Copyright Infringements

Do you watch movies or television shows downloaded from the internet? Do you listen to music that your found on a file sharing network? If so, you may be shocked to discover that you are taking part in an illegal activity known as copyright infringement. Most people have no idea that many of the files available on the internet are not released by the owner of the media but by people who are trying to make money through theft. The availability of popular television shows, current movies, popular songs, and even expensive computer software is hard to stay away from. Why spend money on movies or software, when you can get it for free?

In order to combat copyright infringement, many people who create the movies, television shows, and music that we love have decided to create their own websites to house their programs. These websites are often supported through advertisement and you may have to sit through some ads during your favorite television show but in the end you will have access to free or low cost entertainment without stealing from anyone.

If you love to watch movies and videos, you may be interested in independent movies created under the creative commons license. Revver media (www.revver.com) is a great website that currently has over 7,000 different videos for you to watch. Many of the videos are created by professionals who work full time to create new web videos for people to watch. You can find many different genres of video entertainment at Revver media and with new videos being released daily, you may find yourself spending more time at Revver than you do watching television. On Networks (www.onnetworks.com) is another independent video website that allows you to download videos for free. Many of the shows available through On Networks are short infotainment style shows. For mainstream television and movies, visit Hulu.com (www.hulu.com). Hulu has clips and full episodes of many television shows and movies, however, you are not able to download the shows which means you must watch while connected to the internet.

For people who love to listen to music it can be hard to find legal downloads of music. Several websites have been created for people to listen to music online without stealing the files but what do you do when you want to take the music with you? First, try to listen to bands that are pro-file sharing. It may takes a few minutes, but with a little work you can find out if your favorite bands are pro-filing sharing. Or, find a new favorite band through Unsigned (www.unsigned.com) which provides unsigned music artists a place to post their music and find fans. Artist Server (www.artistserver.com) is another great website that provides pro-file sharing bands a place to distribute their music using the creative commons license and find new fans. If you listen and support pro-file sharing bands, you can help prove to the people who create movies and other forms of entertainment that people can make money even if they share their art for free.

Did you know that besides movies, television shows, and music you can find books to read on the internet? Many classic books are now in the public domain and available on the internet for free. Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) has spent several years converting classic books that are in the public domain to electronic books that you can download and read. Project Gutenberg even has a downloadable book catalog for you to use if you do not know what book you want to read. For more contemporary reading materials, you may want to check out Manybooks.net (www.manybooks.net). Many authors will release their stories of novels under the creative commons copyright license which allows you to download and read their works for free. If you like a book that is released under creative commons you may want to consider purchasing a copy in order to help support the author and their file sharing beliefs.

There are also many software developers who release their software for free. You can even use Google Docs (www.google.com) to replace your expensive office productivity software suite. If your looking for a free operating system for your computer, consider installing Linux. Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com) is an easy to use and install form of linux that you can use for free. There are also thousands of software programs available for linux, including office programs and photoshop replacements. To explore many of the software choices available with linux check out www.linuxsoftware.org.

Finally, in order to reduce the chance you are committing copyright infringement, you should consider producing your own works and publishing them. In order to create enough legal media and provide everyone with the media and art forms they desire, we all need to join in and start creating our own art. Even if your not a professional, creating your own media and distributing it under the creative commons license allows others to enjoy what you make and challenges them to make and release their own media. Your not limited to videos or television shows, you can take photos, make music and even write books. Providing everyone with media that does not infringe on copyright keeps us all legal and entertained.

10 Products We Can’t Wait For

Advances in technology happen every day. People constantly create new methods of using technology and new ideas on what technology should be. We find that often these advances do little to improve our lives. Who really needs a plastic container that will cook your pasta when you add hot water? But sometimes you hear about and advancing technology and can not wait for the final product to hit the market, sure some of the items we are waiting for may never happen but we like to hold out hope and keep waiting.

Computers are constantly changing. Even if you purchase the greatest computer available today chances are next week a better computer will be released. We are really excited to be waiting for our new Linux smart phone/internet tablet. This smart phone will combine the best aspects of a smart phone with the flexibility of an internet tablet. Want to take pictures? Carry your phone and use the 5MP built in camera. Then you can automatically upload the photos to your favorite photo sharing site or email to your friends. If you want to take a video instead of photos, you can do that with the HD video capabilities and even play the vide back through the mini projector. Of course many of the standard smartphone features we all rely on daily are standard with this phone, built in wifi (got it), 3G internet speeds (got it), bluetooth for communication and file sharing (got it). This new smartphone/internet tablet will be with us constantly every day and we can not wait.

Another piece of computer technology that we cannot wait for is the Wii headgear. With the 3D Wii headgear we will be able to completely enter the virtual world of Zelda. Think about the hours of fun available to us with this new headgear. We can play our favorite games and experience somatosensory stimulation. Before the release of the Wii headgear, Mario is nothing but a two-demensional character on our television screen. After the release of the Wii headgear, we become Mario and start our own adventures.

Our third piece of technology that we cannot wait for is advanced 3D printers that contain open source hardware. Imagine the possibilities of 3D printing. You will be able to print 3D pictures of your family or build a model of your own home by using a printer. Once these printers begin to use open source hardware, the price of the printer will begin to fall and soon will be affordable for everyone. Technology will get us to 3D printing soon and even if it seems far fetched think about some of the other forms of technology that were once thought of as science-fiction but now are reality.

The ability to create a diamond was once the private domain of Mother Earth, but now diamonds can created in a lab. Once large scale synthetic materials fabrication starts to become standard in our factories around the world, we may find that the demands we place on natural resources are reduced. We will be able to reduce our demands on the natural resources of the earth when Maglev Intercity Train systems begin to be installed in cities around the world. These magnetic levitation systems will change the way people get to from one point to another and they can even take us to space. But while we wait for the Maglev Intercity Train network, we will settle for a high speed, long distance electric car that had rapid transit hookups. Again, think about the amount of gas we can save when these high speed electric cars are released for sale. But if cars and trains are not your preferred mode of transportation, why not wait with us for our jet wings. In 2006, Yves Rossy created his own jet wings and flew over the Swiss Alps. We are still waiting for word on wether or not Rossy will ever bring his jet pack to market but he does have sponsors and many people can not wait for this new form of transportation to take off.

We are also excited about the Space Elevator. This elevator is being built and will be a gateway to space with a simple elevator and cable system. While the exact design is still being worked out, people go to their job every day and work on the space elevator. We will be there when it opens because the space elevator is one of the products that we cannot wait for.

Back on Earth, we with with anxiety for new mobile medical units. Mobile medical units are designed to help in medical situations where there is a lack of doctors or to speed up the diagnosis and healing process. Using technology, you will be able to place a mobile medical diagnosis unit on your injury and receive information on how to treat the wound or infection. Of course, there will always be a need for doctors but technology will keep up the medical field and provide methods to aid in treating larger amounts of people quickly.

Finally, the last product that we cannot wait for is going to help with our household bills and expenses. Closed water systems are providing an Earth friendly form of water collection and processing that any homeowner can install and use and our own electricity generation is not far behind. No longer will a home owner be forced to connect to the city water supply or pay the high cost for electricity charged by the providers. We will be able to take our homes back and provide the water and electricity we need ourselves.

No matter when these products become available for sale and use, we know we will be in line to purchase. The technologies that are being built upon will change our lives forever. No longer will people wonder how technology can fit into their lives because when these ten products are available for purchase, people will wonder how they ever lived without. We cannot wait for the next technology release, how about you?

Musical Instruments and Technology

Technology is slowly incorporating itself into all aspects of our lives. You may not be aware of it but much of the music you listen to may not be created by traditional instruments but instead is actually created with a computer. Today synthesized music no longer sounds like computer beeps and bops but actually can mimic traditional instruments. Sometimes the synthesized sounds are so good that that the untrained ear no longer can tell the difference. Not only does technology help reproduce the instruments of old but people are creating new instruments as well.

One of the most well known instruments created by technology is the laser harp. The laser harp is a modern take on the traditional string harp. A single laser beam is split into several different parallel layers of light to create “strings” and connected to a synthesizer. In order to play the harp, you block the corresponding light string which activates the corresponding sound. The laser harp was made famous by the musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The laser harp itself makes no sound but Jarre has consistently uses the laser harp to create the same sounds which people have begin to associate with the technological instrument. Alternate designs of the laser harp are available and usually consist of multiple lasers. There are some concerns about the laser power needed to create a harp. Because the laser beam is split into many different beams of light, a class III or IV laser is generally necessary and there may be significant risk of eye or skin damage from these powerful lasers.

The Ball Bearing Beat Machine is an another intriguing method of creating music with technology. The beat machine is set up in a grid formation, different sounds are assigned to the horizontal axis and tempo is assigned to the vertical axis. Musical beats are created by placing the ball bearings into a holder on the grid. The balls can be placed close together to create a fast beat or spread apart to slow the tempo down. Entire songs can be created simply by moving the ball bearings around the machine as a the music is created. The Ball Bearing Beat Machine, can replace traditional drum sets and create temps and beat patterns that many drummers are unable to create themselves. Many designers have expanded upon the idea of the ball bearing beat machine to create beat machines that use blocks or other materials to lay out the sound patterns. The sounds and designs of these machines are only limited by their ability to create different sounds at varying speeds.

The Tenori-On Music Synthesizer consists of a screen that you hold in your hands. This synthesizer has been a hit of technology fans because it is the first mass produced music synthesizer that does not look like a piano. This sixteen by sixteen square grid houses LED switches representing different musical notes. You activate the switches in several different ways to create music. Anyone can create music with the Tenori-On Music Synthesizer simply by selecting the buttons you want to play. You can lay out a light pattern or program a sequence to play a melody. There are a total of 256 different built-in notes and you can extend the ability of the synthesizer through additional samples and customization options. With this portable synthesizer anyone can create music and once you create something worth saving, you can record up to 16 different tracks then edit the files on your computer.

Not only are musicians using technology to create new instruments but musicians are using technology to create new music as well. Many creative artists have produced songs from nothing but the sounds our computers make. Many of these are so well crafted that you are not able to tell the music is created entirely from computer sounds unless it is pointed out to you. Windows XP and Vista error sounds are very popular because of their varying patterns and variety sounds available in the operating systems.

In music, creativity has no boundary and technology only expands the possibilities. The only limit a musician will find is the limit of our imagination. While many manufacturers are focusing on using new technologies to create unusual music creation device, many artists like Jean-Michel Jarre are building new musical instruments from tools and equipment available today. There are some people who believe that many of these new music devices actually do not work as they have been portrayed and that all demonstrations are cleverly edited videos however even if the devices do not work exactly as they should every time it is played, these devices are still musical instruments. No musician is able to get their chosen device to work accurately every time it is played. Our musical instruments are changing as technology changes and advances and with each new day an artist will create another work of art from those advancements

The internet has allowed individuals to share their desires and fantasies anonymously. People who feel unfulfilled by their personal sexual activity can seek out other people who share the same desires. No matter what your desire or your fantasy, you can find someone who shared your desire on the internet and you can even discuss these fantasies without anyone in your life knowing about it. Before the internet it was much harder for many individuals to find like minded people. The internet allows people to explore their fantasies without engaging in dangerous or illegal actions.

The internet has also succeeded in spreading Western ideals of women’s liberation to countries around the world. In countries where women were seen as commodities in the past, feministic ideas are slowly starting to seep into society. Women are slowly moving into the workplace and learning to be equal partners in society. Equal partners means equal in all activities and that includes sex, thanks to technology women are learning that sex should be an enjoyable act. In India, sex toys are now being introduced into the market and over 57 percent of the population has expressed desire in purchasing a toy.

It goes without saying that technology has been applied to many sex toys as well. Improvements in plastics and in the technology of motors has changed the look and feel of many sex toys. Even birth control medications and products have been improved due to advanced in medical and technological research. Birth control pills no longer bombard a woman’s body with unnecessary hormones or drugs. Condoms are now able to vibrate. Lubrication products can increase sensation for both men and women and will chemically interact with either when combined together to produce new and unusual sensations.

Sexual desire is strong and compelling for all adults and technology is working hard to improve our sex lives. Even if you have no interest in taking part in the billion dollar porn business look around your bedroom, you may discover that technology has aided and improved your sex life.

10 Ways to Use Technology for Social Justice

1. Wearable cameras for people at risk
With increasingly small and innocuous cameras rising on poles on top of buildings everywhere to protect industries, banks and government buildings, ordinary individuals are starting to wear cameras for their own safety. These devices act as a sort of “video microphone”, recording, at the click of a button, the events occurring during a certain length of time. The implications for personal safety are similar to the safety provided to businesses and institutions that have used cameras for protection for decades.

2. Creative Virals

The internet’s huge reach allows anyone to easily access millions of people with their comments or message. Short clips of video spread through the World Wide Web like wildfire. In this way, a message that is sufficiently creative and effective can reach an audience of millions. Moreover, there is no censorship or corporate control on internet content, so the message of viral can be subversive instead of profitable.

3. Submit alternative links to social news sites
Alternative social news websites, since they do not have the means to be distributed by the regular channels available to large media corporations, need active distribution by readers and supporters. The internet, especially peer to peer sharing traffic, provides the ideal, inexpensive medium to circulate alternative news sites.

4. Encourage use of the Internet
The Internet allows very small businesses in impoverished parts of the world to access a global market place with their own locally made products. This allows poor and disadvantages to compete on an equal footing in a global marketplace.

5. Networking
Communication technology and the Internet have given grassroots groups and social advocacy groups unparalleled ability to network and communicate. Previously, individuals and groups in different countries and in different parts of the same country had no way of communicating, sharing information and coordinating action.

6. Teach Something in 5 Minutes on Youtube.
Youtube allows the individual to demonstrate and distribute instructions on just about any operation or technique with only a small webcam and an internet connection. Since it is a mainstream website, the instructional video is assured of maximum exposure and large audience of people with similar interests. Because Youtube brings people both video and audio, exhibitions of even the most physical activities are possible.

7. Email your Senator or Congressman.
The internet is a great equalizer in that it allows messages to be sent without even the cost of postage. Never before have our leaders, our senators and congressmen, been so closely available. E-mail is increasingly taking over the communication formerly carried by postal workers and is therefore being received by institutions with the same regard as paper mail. If more people sent regular messages to their leaders, the public voice would be louder, if not more clear.

8. Fundraising
Technology and the Internet allows Social Justice groups to publicize their cause and fundraise worldwide. Online fundraising is so successful, it is widely considered a ‘boom’ industry with consultants, software, web portals and more to assist groups raise money online. Online fundraising also frees Social Justice groups from restrictions which may come from accepting funding from Government.

9. Leak Corruption to wikileaks
Wikileaks is a whistle blower website. It encourages those individuals in possession of sensitive government or corporate materials to publish these documents anonymously. The site works to protect contributors’ identities while at the same time outing corrupt government or corporate practices and policies. The site was kept as a secret until January of 2007. The credibility of the posted documents is openly debated on the website itself, so there is a wide margin for false or inaccurate postings. The site does, however, have an advisory board to monitor the quality and veracity of the site’s sensitive and often severely critical content.

10. Build a Strong Democracy and Educated electorate.

Providing information technology to rural areas and impoverished communities increases the general education level, and leads to a better informed population which can then participate in civil society.

10 Products and Services that will be replaced by Computers and Robots Very Shortly

1. Bank Tellers: The proliferation of online banking means that the brick and mortar bank is soon on its way to fossilization and a place in a museum. If the Automated Transaction Machine (ATM) had not already given the personal teller a clear signal that he or she was no longer an entirely necessary service, the now ubiquitous online banking services offered by all major and minor banks across the nation will certainly spell the end for redundant tellers.

2. Paper: Paper is resource that has cost the earth heavily when it comes to carbon sinks such as the South American rainforest and soil stabilizers such as the evergreen forests of the northwest United States. So it is with a happy countenance that we predict the redundancy of paper within the next decade or so, as electronic documents take over the niche formerly filled by blank sheets.

3. Insurance Agents: Door to door insurance agents, thankfully, will soon become a distant past memory, as more and more insurance companies realize the advantages of peddling their insurance packages online and making themselves available to customers actually seeking their services for a fraction of the cost of face to face solicitation.

4. Travel Agents: Fewer and fewer travel consumers are going to brick and mortar travel agents as the majority of travel plans are being made online. Travel agents will still operate, but their range of service will be greatly expanded as fewer and wider geographic barriers will exist. What’s more, efficiency will be greatly enhanced, as agents will no longer wait for customers to come to the agency location, but will serve a much larger online market.

5. Real Estate Agents: Buying and selling homes and property has become an almost entirely online experience. From perusing the real estate news to scanning lists of available for sale homes to the communication between agents and clients, the process is rarely completed on a face to face level. Moreover, real estate agents are becoming redundant service, as sellers are able to get in touch with buyers directly and cut out the expense of a flesh and blood agent.

6. Music Stores: Virgin Records and HMV will very shortly be closing their doors in many locations as the demand for brick and mortar music stores decreases to nothing and more and more of the total percentage of music sales occurs online. I-Tunes has already paved the way for music to be distributed entirely online and, in doing so, cutting out large amounts of overhead cost while not passing that saving on to the consumer who seems happy to continue paying the same rate online as he or she would in a conventional music store.

7. Cable Television: With cable consumers less and less satisfied with the rates and packages available through conventional cable providers, and with digital and satellite services often outside an average consumers budget, online television will be become ever more prevalent as the millennium progresses. For instance, for fifty dollars, a consumer can usually purchase twenty eight channels. Some of those channels broadcast the same content, sometimes at the same time, while almost eighty percent of the content will have no interest to the consumer whatsoever. It seems only logical that a pay per channel or even per program service online would attract a substantial proportion of the television entertainment dollar.

8. Movie Theaters: Movie theaters across the country are hemorrhaging money as fewer and fewer consumers choose the traditional venues of entertainment and their attention is ever increasingly split between film, television, music, and other forms of entertainment. As a result, Hollywood and other worldwide film production and distribution centers will have to explore new routes to get their products to the consumer. For films, the obvious route is online distribution. Movies, both released and unreleased are already widely illegally distributed online, so it only makes good business sense to make clean and easy to work down loadable copies of films available online to compete with bootleggers and provide a new alternative revenue stream. Like music, similar fees could be charged for downloads as for more costly distribution methods such as theaters and stores.

9. AM/FM Radio: The AM and FM channels are quickly being replaced by satellite radio and by live streaming over the internet. Live streaming in particular is a virtual twin to a on-air broadcast, except the signal quality of live streaming is easier to control and can be received anywhere with the proper connection.

10. Ticket Agents: High street ticket agents are a thing of the past now that the internet has revolutionized the way we buy tickets. In years to come there will be no high street ticket agents what-so-ever, all tickets will be purchased on the internet with ease and without the hassle of all that queuing malarkey.
